In Rainbows
First, I finished my MA dissertation. If anyone wants to read it, leave a comment and I’ll mail it to you.
Secondly, the bigger news is the new Radiohead album is coming out on the 10th of October (one day after my birthday). It has an evocative title – In Rainbows. One can, as most people reading this probably know, buy it in a lovely boxed set for £40 (vinyl LP x 2, hardback book, CDx2, huge artwork book), or download it from the website for “as much as you like” (I paid £1, but you can pay £0). A great two fingers up to the record companies – even if they do sign this record over to them, it will be all over the internet before you can buy it at your Tescos.
Track listing? With a bit of Youtube digging I present the following. For a short review – see the breathtaking version of Arpeggi below, the first track and House of Cards.
Still no Lift
.
1. 15 Step
2. Body Snatchers
3. Nude
You paint yourself white
and feel up with noise
but there’ll be something missing
4. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
Been knocking around for a while (but not as long as, say Nude). Hopefully the album version will be similar to this version.
Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
5. All I Need
6. Faust Arp
7. The Reckoner
8. House of Cards
Radiohead go reggae via Neil Young? One of the most joyous radiohead songs I have heard.
I don’t want to be your friend
I just want to be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it startsForget about your house of cards
And I’ll deal mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll deal mine
9. Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Bit of a Sonic Youth influence on this one.
10. Videotape
This version is particularly gorgeous.
You are my center
When i spin away
Out of control
on videotape
Alex, congrats on finishing your MA! I would be stoked to have a copy.
Peace,
Eric
Alex, Well done on finishing the disso. I’d love a copy.
I finally downloaded this record this morning…fucking brilliant. Weird fishes may be the best song I’ve ever heard.
and although i’m late in saying it, happy birthday.
Yeh, it is great indeed. That track is incredible and it is just a beautifully cohesive album as a whole, which is produced to an absolute untouchable perfection. When you strip it down, the songs are very simple (see House of Cards – two or three chords for how long) but with Johnny and Ed putting their guitars/laptops through about a million pedal and creating some weird subtle noise it is just sublime. See also the simple looping piano of Videotape. Man it is good.
would you mind passing along a copy of your thesis?
many thanks.
